● constrain … 何かを する ように強いる Circumstances constrained me to sell off the stocks. 事情があって、やむを得ず持ち株を売却した。 He was constrained to admit the offense. 彼は自分の罪を認めさせられた。 I was constrained to tell a lie. 私は嘘をつかざるを得なかった。 ● restrain … 何かを しない ように強いる I restrained my son from going out. 私は出て行こうとする息子を押しとどめた。 He restrained me from asking further questions. 彼は私にそれ以上の質問をさせなかった。 He has restrained himself from drinking recently. 彼は最近、酒を自制している。

avenge / revenge / retaliate の3つとも「復讐する」の意味だが、次のような違いがある。 ● avenge … 正義感による行為で、自分や他人に対する不正を懲らしめること。悪者が報いを受けるという意味合いが強く、復讐される側には同情の余地がない。 She was determined to avenge the wrongs she had suffered. 彼女は不正な扱いを受けたことに仕返しをしようと決意していた。 The United States is preparing to avenge the terrorist attacks. 米国はテロ攻撃への報復の準備を進めている。 [語法] avenge (被害者) on (復讐の相手) for (復讐の対象となる事柄) avenge (復讐の対象となる事柄) on (復讐の相手) ● revenge … 私的な感情に裏付けられており、自分をひどい目に合わせた相手を、ひどい目に合わせ返すことによって満足感を得ること。他人になりかわって報復してやることにも使う。 He wanted to revenge himself on the boss for firing him. 彼は自分を解雇した上司に復讐したかった。 I will revenge this insult some day. この侮辱に対してはいつか仕返しをしてやる。 [語法] revenge (被害者) on (復讐の相手) for (復讐の対象となる事柄) revenge (復讐の対象となる事柄) on (復讐の相手) ● retaliate … 復讐のために具体的に何をするかに重点がある。 When the boy hit me, I retaliated by kicking him. その少年が私をぶったので、私はお返しにそいつを蹴ってやった。 It's very like him to retaliate against them with such tactics. こういう術策で彼らに報復しようというのは、いかにも彼らしい。 [語法] retaliate on/against (復讐の相手) with/by (復讐の手段) retaliate for/against (復讐の対象となる...
