● choose … 「選ぶ」を意味する最も一般的な語。いくつかのものから自分の判断で選ぶ。2つの中から選ぶ場合も、3つ以上の中から選ぶ場合も使える。 Women sometimes feel forced to choose between family and career. 女性はときどき家庭と仕事のどちらかを選ばざるを得ないような気持ちになる。 Choose one of the four answers that you think is correct. 4つの答えから正しいと思うものを1つ選びなさい。 ● select … 多くのものから最も目的にかなっているものを入念に選び出す。3つ以上の中から選ぶ場合に使う（選択肢が2つしかない場合は使えない）。 We must select one from among these applicants. この応募者の中から1人を選ばなくてはならない。 He was selected as the new class leader. 彼は新しいクラス委員長に選ばれた。 It took him a long time to select a tie that would match his shirt. シャツに合うネクタイを選び出すのにずいぶん時間がかかった。

● agree … 「同意する」を表す一般的な語。 I agree with you on that matter. その件ではあなたと同意見だ。 My wife readily agreed to move in with my parents. 両親の家で同居することを妻は快く承知してくれた。 ● assent … 相手の意見などに反対しないことで、消極的に同意を与えること。 Her parents finally assented to her marriage. 両親は最後には彼女の結婚に同意した。 My father reluctantly assented to my departure for Europe. 父はしぶしぶ私のヨーロッパ行きに同意した。 ● consent … 権限のある人が積極的に同意すること。許可の含みを持った同意で、上から下に対するもの。 Mother didn't consent to my keeping rabbits. 母は私がウサギを飼うのを許してくれなかった。 We consented to give him financial help. 私たちは彼に資金援助することを承諾した。
