紛らわしい used to (do/doing) の表現

この記事では、英語を学習している多くの方が「紛らわしい」と感じているであろう used to を使った表現についてまとめます。 ◆ (主語) used to do … (以前は) ～したものだった これは 過去の状態や習慣 を表す表現です。ここで使われている used は自動詞 use の 過去形 です。英和辞典で use を引くと、自動詞として「常に～する、～するのが習慣である」という意味が載っています。もともとは現在時制でも使われていたようですが、今は過去時制でのみ使われ、 「(以前は) ～していた、～するのが習慣だった」 という意味になります。 I used to live around here. 私は以前、この辺りに住んでいた。 I used to see him often. 以前はよく彼に会ったものだった。 used は一般動詞の過去形なので、疑問文や否定文にするときは did を付けて used を use に戻します。 Did you use to live around here? 以前はこの辺りに住んでいたのですか？ I didn't use to like vegetables. 以前は野菜が好きではありませんでした。 参考： 過去の習慣や反復を表す would と used to の違い ◆ (主語) be used to do … ～するために使われる この表現では  used  の前に  be 動詞 が付いているので  used は  use の 過去分詞 であり、単に 「(何かをするために) (主語) が使われる」 という受け身の意味になります。 Asphalt is used to pave roads. アスファルトは道路を舗装するために使われます。 Violence shouldn't be used to solve conflicts. 争いを解決するために暴力を使うべきではない。 ◆ (主語) be used to doing … ～することに慣れている この表現の  used も過去分詞ですが、受け身ではなく 「(～に) 慣れている」 という状態を表す 形容詞 として使われ...
