The treatment that took place here about a year and a half ago was unprecedented in the world. He is Dr. Kazuhiko Maekawa. He has been involved in the emergency care for about 30 years. "In the accident that occurred at the Tokaimura plant of JCO, three workers were exposed to radiation..." NHKラジオ講座「ラジオビジネス英語」に出てきた表現のうち、番組内で特にしっかり説明されていないけれども、日常会話で使えそうなものを取り上げます。 今回は take a toll on ... (～に損害・悪影響を与える) です (2021年4月5日放送分)。英英辞典を引くと、次のように説明されています。 “to have a serious, bad effect on someone or something: to cause harm or damage” — Merriam-Webster Learner's Dictionary “to harm or damage someone or something, especially in a gradual way” — Macmillan Dictionary どちらも同じような内容ですが、Macmillan Dictionaryには “in a gradual way” と書かれています。つまり、影響が一度に現れるのではなく、ある程度の期間をかけて徐々に影響が現れるということです。NHKのテキストに載っている例文は次のとおりです。 The pandemic has taken a toll on the US economy. パンデミックはアメリカ経済に打撃を与えました。 新型コロナウイルスの蔓延によって経済が徐々にむしばまれていることを言っています。その他の例文をいくつか以下に挙げておきます。 Too much drink has taken a heavy toll on him. 大酒のため、彼はひどく健康を害している。 Years of smoking have taken a toll on his health. 何年にもわたる喫煙は、彼の健康に悪影響を与えている。 The plastic is taking a heavy toll on marine life. プラスチックは海洋生物に大きな被害を与えている。
