● constrain … 何かを する ように強いる Circumstances constrained me to sell off the stocks. 事情があって、やむを得ず持ち株を売却した。 He was constrained to admit the offense. 彼は自分の罪を認めさせられた。 I was constrained to tell a lie. 私は嘘をつかざるを得なかった。 ● restrain … 何かを しない ように強いる I restrained my son from going out. 私は出て行こうとする息子を押しとどめた。 He restrained me from asking further questions. 彼は私にそれ以上の質問をさせなかった。 He has restrained himself from drinking recently. 彼は最近、酒を自制している。

● choose … 「選ぶ」を意味する最も一般的な語。いくつかのものから自分の判断で選ぶ。2つの中から選ぶ場合も、3つ以上の中から選ぶ場合も使える。 Women sometimes feel forced to choose between family and career. 女性はときどき家庭と仕事のどちらかを選ばざるを得ないような気持ちになる。 Choose one of the four answers that you think is correct. 4つの答えから正しいと思うものを1つ選びなさい。 ● select … 多くのものから最も目的にかなっているものを入念に選び出す。3つ以上の中から選ぶ場合に使う（選択肢が2つしかない場合は使えない）。 We must select one from among these applicants. この応募者の中から1人を選ばなくてはならない。 He was selected as the new class leader. 彼は新しいクラス委員長に選ばれた。 It took him a long time to select a tie that would match his shirt. シャツに合うネクタイを選び出すのにずいぶん時間がかかった。

● agree … 「同意する」を表す一般的な語。 I agree with you on that matter. その件ではあなたと同意見だ。 My wife readily agreed to move in with my parents. 両親の家で同居することを妻は快く承知してくれた。 ● assent … 相手の意見などに反対しないことで、消極的に同意を与えること。 Her parents finally assented to her marriage. 両親は最後には彼女の結婚に同意した。 My father reluctantly assented to my departure for Europe. 父はしぶしぶ私のヨーロッパ行きに同意した。 ● consent … 権限のある人が積極的に同意すること。許可の含みを持った同意で、上から下に対するもの。 Mother didn't consent to my keeping rabbits. 母は私がウサギを飼うのを許してくれなかった。 We consented to give him financial help. 私たちは彼に資金援助することを承諾した。

● proud … 良い意味でも悪い意味でも使い、さまざまに受け止められる。 I am proud of being born Japanese. 日本人として生まれたことを誇りに思っています。 She is very proud that her son won the prize. 彼女は息子が受賞してとても誇らしげだった。 She was too proud to talk to us. 彼女はお高くとまっていて私たちと口もきかなかった。 These days he is as proud as a peacock. 最近、彼は思い上がっている。 ● arrogant … 悪い意味で使い、自分は他の人よりずっと優れている、重要であると考えて尊大な態度を取ることを表す。 The actress was bashed by the media for her arrogant behavior. その女優は態度が傲慢だとしてマスコミからバッシングを受けた。 It is profoundly arrogant of human beings to believe they can control everything in nature. 自然のあらゆることを制御できると信じるのは人類の大変な思い上がりだ。 ● haughty … 悪い意味で使い、自分の家柄、身分、地位などを過度に意識し、人を見下して軽蔑的な態度を取ることを表す。 I was angry at the haughty attitude of the clerk at the window. 窓口の担当者の高慢な態度には腹が立った。 He is haughty toward those below him. 彼は目下の者に横柄だ。

● argue … 心の中で結論がはじめから決まっていて、自分の意見が正しいことを証明しようとして熱弁をふるう。論点について賛成するか反対するかのどちらかである。 The brothers argued over their parents' estate. 親の遺産をめぐって兄弟が言い合った。 People are still arguing about what to do with the money. その金をどう扱うべきかをめぐって人々はまだ議論している。 They argued for the abolition of nuclear arms. 彼らは核兵器の廃絶に賛成する意見を述べた。 He argued against capital punishment. 彼は死刑反対論を述べた。 Many people argued that her psychic powers were a hoax. 彼女の超能力はでっちあげだと主張する人が多かった。 ● discuss … 最善の結論を見いだすために、さまざまな意見を出し合って、いろいろな角度から節度ある議論をする。 We need to discuss widely the merits and demerits of genetic research. 遺伝子研究の功罪について広くみんなで議論する必要がある。 The problem we have to discuss is the long-term consequences of building a dam. 我々が議論しなければならないのは、ダムの建設による長期的な影響の問題だ。 Unification of currency was discussed at the conference. 会議では通貨統一について話し合われた。 We discussed what to do during the vacation. 休暇中に何をするかを相談した。
