Suicide risk peaks at the start of high school, with teenagers six times more likely to kill themselves at the age of 14 or 15 than at 12 or 13.
Indigenous children aged four to nine are twice as likely to kill themselves as others the same age, while the suicide rate among Aboriginal teenagers is five times higher than for other teens.

Ms Mitchell said parents, schools and health authorities “need to be getting in much earlier’’ to identify risks, build children’s coping skills and encourage them to get help.

She called for more research into the impact of social media on children’s psychological wellbeing.
Children’s brains were developing rapidly in their early teens, she said, when they were still “quite impulsive’’.

“They are having to change from primary school to high school and some kids adjust better than others,’’ she told The Australian yesterday. “Emotions are intense at that time, but their emotional regulation and impulse control is poor.’’
Ms Mitchell said children needed to be taught “coping skills’’.
“Seemingly little things for adults can weigh very heavily on a child’s mind and emotions,’’ she said.
“I think digital technology amplifies what kids feel and they are exposed to information that is often unfiltered.”
Ms Mitchell said children needed “go-to people they can trust’’ to talk to about their problems instead of “bottling up’’ their distress.

“It’s a really important protective factor to have people you can talk to and trust — your teacher, your sports coach, your neighbour or an aunty,’’ she said.
The report — based on unpublished data from the National Coronial Information Service — reveals three out of four suicides happen at home.

Indigenous children account for 28 per cent of suicides, even though they make up 3 per cent of the population.
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data recorded 18,277 hospitalisations for intentional self-harm among children between 2007-08 and 2012-13.
“Females were significantly more likely to be hospitalised for intentional self-poisoning,’’ the report says.
It suggests “further restrictions’’, such as age limits, on the sale of paracetamol or aspirin products, following last year’s decision to reduce the size of packets sold in supermarkets to 20 tablets. “Age identification requirements may also assist in restricting access to means,’’ the report says.
