 ／		 同じレベルの恐怖を表す。

Many children are afraid of / scared of / frightened of cockroaches.

※ be frightened of は主に突然の恐怖を表し、代名詞を取らないという違いがある。

The earthquake scared / frightened me.
          ↓

※ afraid は by を取らない。
