NHKラジオ講座「ラジオビジネス英語」に出てきた表現のうち、番組内で特にしっかり説明されていないけれども、日常会話で使えそうなものを取り上げます。 今回は bring (something) to light です (2021年4月16日放送分)。NHKのテキストでは、4月号の94ページ、「Answers to Listening Points」の2番目の解答に次のような文が載っています。 She concluded that co-creative discussions at staff level helped bring both ideas and realities surrounding working practices to light . グラットンさんは、スタッフレベルでの共創的な議論が、仕事のやり方に関するアイデアと現実の両方を明らかにするのに役立ったと結論付けました。 上の文では bring と to light がずいぶん離れているのでわかりにくいかもしれません。このように (something) にあたる部分が長い場合は、 bring to light (something) と語順を逆にすることもありますが、どのぐらい長ければ語順を逆にするのかという基準があるわけではないようです。 bring (something) to light の意味は 「(秘密や証拠などを) 明らかにする、明るみに出す」 です。ある英英辞典では、 “to make new information known to people” と説明されています。つまり、「今まで陰に隠れて見えなかったものに光を照らして見えるようにする」→「今まで知られていなかったことを知られるようにする」→「明らかにする」と考えるとわかりやすいでしょう。 【例文】 The scandal was brought to light by two journalists. そのスキャンダルは2人の記者によって暴露された。 The excavations brought to light the remnants of an ancient civilization. 発掘によって古代文明の遺物が掘り出された。 This article bri...
