NHKラジオ英会話で出演者が話した言葉の中に buy time (時間を稼ぐ) というのがありました。 「時間を稼ぐ」という表現は、他にも gain time 、 play for time 、 stall for time などがあります。これらの表現を使った例文を以下にご紹介します。 ● buy time The student tried to buy time by asking some questions. その生徒はいくつか質問をして時間を稼いだ。 The new drug will buy some time for end-stage patients. その新薬は末期患者にとってある程度の時間稼ぎになるだろう。 ● gain time Management temporized with labor to gain time. 経営者側は時間稼ぎのために労働者側にのらりくらりと対応した。 He gained time by putting off signing the papers for a few days more. 書類の署名を2、3日延ばして時間を稼いだ。 ● play for time She couldn't return the money on the day she promised and had to play for time. 彼女は約束した日に返金できず、時間稼ぎをしなければならなかった。 Their maneuvering at the conference was obviously calculated to play for time. 会議における彼らの策動は明らかに時間稼ぎを狙ったものだった。 ● stall for time The reason the negotiations are not making any progress is that the other party is stalling for time. 交渉がちっとも進まないのは相手側が時間稼ぎをしているからだ。 We stalled for time until the reinforcements arrived. 我々は援軍が到着するまで時間を稼いだ。

2023年度NHKラジオ英会話に出てきた表現のうち、私の目に（耳に）止まって少し調べてみたものをご紹介します。 今回は lose track of time（時がたつのを忘れる） です。この表現は time の部分を入れ替えれば、時間に限らず 「～がわからなくなる」 や 「～を見失う」 という意味で使うことができます。 We lost track of time and spent the whole night talking. 私たちは時間のたつのも忘れて語り明かした。 I've lost track of the days of the week. 曜日の感覚がわからなくなってしまった。 I lost track of him in the crowd. 人ごみの中で彼の姿を見失ってしまった。 また、 lose track of の反対は keep track of です。 「～を見失わないようにする」 や 「～の経過を追う」 という意味で使うことができます。 The police kept track of me all the time. 警察は絶えず私の行動を監視した。 We must keep track of all our expenses. 経費はすべてきちんと記録しておかねばならない。 We should keep track of the typhoon's subsequent movements. 今後の台風の動きに十分注意すべきだ。

2023年度NHKラジオ英会話に出てきた表現のうち、私の目に（耳に）止まって少し調べてみたものをご紹介します。 最初に取り上げるのは make short work of です。講座のテキストには 「（仕事を）さっさと片づける」 という意味が載っていました。手持ちの辞書を調べると、この表現は仕事に限らず何かを短時間で終わらせるという意味で使えるようです。特に 「仕事を済ませる」 、 「食事を食べ終える」 、 「敵対者をやっつける」 の意味で使われることが多く、その例文を以下に示します。 We will make short work of searching the room. その部屋を手早く捜すことにしよう。 Computers can make short work of complex calculations. コンピュータは複雑な計算をあっという間に処理できる。 Our new dishwasher makes short work of cleaning up after meals. 今度買った皿洗い機だと食後の皿洗いが手っ取り早く済む。 She made short work of the pizza. 彼女はピザをぺろりと平らげた。 The mounted men made short work of the wounded soldiers. 馬に乗った連中は傷ついた兵士をあっさりと始末した。 Come on.
