最も多くの放射線を浴びた、大内さんの右手です。
This is Ouchi's right arm which received the highest radiation exposure.

このときは、少し赤く腫れているだけでした。
At this time, the arm was only slightly reddened and swollen.

事故当日、大内さんは会社のマニュアルに従って、放射性物質を扱う作業を進めていました。
On the day of the accident, Ouchi was handling radioactive materials according to the company's instructions.

バケツを使って、ウランを濃縮する作業でした。
The task was to enrich uranium using a bucket.

臨界が起きる可能性については、まったく知らされていませんでした。

同僚がバケツでウラン溶液を注ぎ、大内さんは漏斗を右手で支えていました。

7杯目のウラン溶液が注がれたとき、突然、青い光が走りました。
On the seventh pouring of uranium solution, a blue flash was suddenly emitted.

核分裂が連続する臨界が起きたのです。
A criticality, or a nuclear chain reaction, had occurred.

放射線が大内さんの細胞の染色体を直撃しました。
The radiation penetrated the chromosomes of his cells.

染色体は、すべての遺伝情報が収められた人体の設計図です。
Chromosomes are the blueprints of a human body that contain all the genetic information.

それぞれ番号が決まっていて、順番に並べることができます。
Each pair of chromosomes has a number and can be arranged in order.

しかし、放射線に直撃された大内さんの染色体は、並べることもできませんでした。
However, it was impossible to arrange Ouchi's irradiated chromosomes.

断ち切られ、別の染色体とくっついているものもありました。
They were broken apart and some of them were stuck to each other.

染色体が破壊されたことは、今後、新しい細胞が作られないことを意味します。
The destruction of the chromosomes meant that new cells would not be generated thereafter.

被曝した瞬間、大内さんの体は設計図を失ってしまったのです。
At the moment of the radiation exposure, Ouchi lost the blueprints of his body.

「染色体がそういうダメージを被ってますから、そこから推測されることは、おそらく肝臓の細胞、あるいはそういう腸の粘膜の細胞、そういったものがですね、すべてダメージを受けていて、おそらくその細胞は再生をできないのではないかと…」
"From the fact that his chromosomes suffered such catastrophic damage, we inferred that his liver cells and bowel mucosal cells were also severely damaged and they might not be able to regenerate themselves."

染色体が破壊されたことによって、最初に異常が現れたのは、血液の細胞でした。
The first abnormal symptom due to the chromosome destruction appeared in his blood cells.

なかでも、体を守る働きをする白血球が急激に減少していました。
The number of his white blood cells, which acted as a defense mechanism of the body, was decreasing dramatically.

ウイルスや細菌に感染しやすい極めて危険な状態でした。
He was in a perilous condition where viral and bacterial infections were likely to occur.
