(12:45～15:45)

健康なとき、皮膚の細胞はさかんに分裂して、新しいものに置き換わります。
Healthy skin cells divide rapidly and new cells replace old ones.

しかし、放射線を浴びた大内さんの皮膚では、新しい細胞ができなくなりました。
However, in Ouchi's irradiated skin, new cells were no longer generated.

古い皮膚ははがれおちていきました。
His old skin was falling off.

皮膚に走る激痛。
Intense pain in his skin.

感染との闘い。
The battle against infection.

肺には水がたまり、呼吸が困難になり始めていました。
He had developed fluid retention in his lungs and he began to experience difficulty in breathing.

看護記録に記された大内さんの言葉です。
These are Ouchi's words in his nursing records.

(もう嫌だ)
(I can't stand it!)

(家に帰る！)
(I wanna go home!)

(やめてくれ)
(Stop it!)

(おふくろ)
(Mom!)

呼吸を助けるため、気管に管を入れて、人工呼吸器を付けることが検討されました。
The medical team considered putting him on a respirator to help him breathe easier.

それは、家族と言葉を交わせなくなることを意味していました。
That meant he would become unable to have conversations with his family. 

面会に訪れた奥さんに、大内さんは語りかけました。
Ouchi talked to his wife who visited him.

「大内さん、たぶんそのころはすごい、いろいろ体のだるさとかが出てきて、お話しするのもたぶん、あの、それこそお話しするのも力がいるっていうか、そういう感じだったと思うんですね。
"At that time, Mr. Ouchi was probably feeling weariness and heaviness, and he seemed to need to gather strength just to speak.

それでもなんかこう、ちょっと優しい口調で、少し笑いながら、奥さんに愛してるよとおっしゃってて、そういうのがやっぱり伝わってくると、私たちはつらいですよね。
In spite of that, he was smiling slightly and said to his wife 'I love you' in a tender tone. Seeing that kind of scenes made our hearts ache.

私たちは、確かにわからないといっても、大内さんがこれから状態が悪くなるっていうのは想像ができることでしたし、あと大内さんももちろん少しは知っていたと思うんですね。悪くなるであろうということを。
It was true that nobody knew for sure what would happen to him, but we were able to imagine that his condition would get worse and worse. I guess he himself was also aware of that.

その中で、家族にそういうことを伝えたということが、大内さんはどんな気持ちで奥さんにその一言を言ったんだろうと思うと、微笑ましいと思いながらも、なんて言えばいいんでしょうね、大内さんの伝えたかったことがその一言に込められていたんだなあと思います。」
In that situation, he told his family of his love. I wonder how he felt when he said to his wife 'I love you.' I think it was a heartwarming moment, but ... I don't know what to say ... I think his words represented what he wanted to tell his family."
