"should"、"ought to"、"supposed to"、"had better"の使い分け

● should … 話し手のアドバイス、意見、批判などを表す

You should buy the green one. It suits you. (アドバイス)
Everyone should see that film. It's amazing! (意見)
You shouldn't have said that. (批判)

いずれの場合も、should の対象となる行動を話し手が「最善」だと思っている。

● ought to … 意味は should と同じ

You should buy the green one. You ought to buy the green one.

意味は同じ

ought to の方がフォーマルで、古風な感じがあり、話し言葉としては一般的でない。

形式的な違いとして、should には短縮形があるが、ought to には短縮形がない。

You shouldn't have said that. (should not は短縮できる)
You ought not to have said that. (ought not to は短縮できない)

疑問文で ought to を使うと馬鹿らしいほどフォーマルで不自然になってしまう。

What time should I get there? (ごく自然な表現)
What time ought I to get there? (とても不自然なので使わない)

● supposed to … 対象となる行動を「重要」だと思っているのは誰なのか

I should be there at 9:00. (重要だと思っているのは自分)
I'm supposed to be there at 9:00. (重要だと思っているのは自分以外の誰か)

● had better … 警告や脅しの意味が含まれる

You should finish everything today. (単なるアドバイスや意見)
You'd better finish everything today. (そうしないと何か悪いことが起きるという警告)
