被曝81日目の夜、前川医師は、大内さんの家族全員を呼びました。
On the 81st night after the radiation accident, Dr. Maekawa called Ouchi's all family members together.

今度心臓が止まっても、もう蘇生措置はしないほうがいいと思う。前川医師は説明しました。
Dr. Maekawa told them that even if Ouchi's heart stopped again, any further resuscitation attempts shouldn't be made.

「そのときにはもう何もしないでくださいということをおっしゃいましたので、それは関係する医療スタッフには徹底してですね、心臓が止まっても、今度はもう心肺蘇生をしないということになりました。」
"His family agreed to my suggestion, and I gave the medical team strict instructions not to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation if his heart stopped again."

家族は言葉少なに、部屋を後にしました。
His family left the room quietly.

その翌日、奥さんは大内さんに語りかけました。
Next day, Ouchi's wife spoke to him.

2000年は越してほしい。
She wanted to ring in the new year with him.

家族は待機室で鶴を折り続けていました。
His family continued to fold paper cranes in the waiting room.

その数は1万羽に達しようとしていました。
The number of the cranes was almost ten thousand.

被曝83日目、奥さんは息子を連れて、大内さんのもとを訪れました。
On the 83rd day after the radiation accident, his wife visited him with his son.

この日初めて、顔のガーゼを外して面会しました。
They saw him without gauze covering his face.

小学生の息子は、父親に呼びかけました。
His son, who was an elementary school student, spoke to him.

(お父さん、がんばって)
(Dad, hang in there.)

「そのときだけ奥さんが泣かれて、私の見る限りではね、奥さんがそのときだけ泣いちゃって。
"His wife cried for the first time. As far as I could see, that was the only time she cried.

なんか、たぶん泣いてるのも、我慢しながら泣いてるんですよね。
Apparently, she was trying to suppress a cry.

我慢しないでって思ってた。」
I thought she didn't have to do that."

その日の夜、大内さんは息を引き取りました。
That night, Ouchi passed away.

大内さん、家族、そして医療チームの83日間にわたる闘いは終わりました。
